Blog Tour {Giveaway}: SYLO by D.J. MacHale

SYLO by D.J. MacHale

Summary:

Does Tucker Pierce have what it takes to be a hero when the U.S. military quarantines his island?

Fourteen-year-old Tucker Pierce prefers to fly under the radar. He’s used to navigating around summer tourists in his hometown on idyllic Pemberwick Island, Maine. He’s content to sit on the sidelines as a backup player on the high school football team. And though his best friend Quinn tells him to “go for it,” he’s too chicken to ask Tori Sleeper on a date. There’s always tomorrow, he figures. Then Pemberwick Island is invaded by a mysterious branch of the U.S. military called SYLO. And sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option for Tucker, because tomorrow may never come.

It’s up to Tucker, Quinn, and Tori to uncover the truth about the singing aircraft that appears only at night—and the stranger named Feit who’s pushing a red crystal he calls the Ruby that brings unique powers to all who take it. Tucker and his friends must rescue not just Pemberwick Island, but the fate of the world—and all before tomorrow is too late.

Blog Tour {Interview & Giveaway}: Nearly Broken by Devon Ashley

Nearly Broken
by Devon Ashley
Release Date: 06/04/13

Summary from Goodreads:
We’d both gone missing at one point, but Claire had one thing I didn’t. Someone to notice. So why was I the one still here and she the one still gone?

Nineteen year old Megan Smith has spent the past year working in a small town diner in the middle of nowhere. Life is quiet, simple, safe. Then comes the news that her look-a-like has gone missing.

Claire.

Still damaged both physically and mentally, Megan's not looking to be noticed. Wherever she goes from here, it's a road she needs to take alone. But when Nickolas Ellis takes the job as the new nightshift cook, it scares her how easily her defenses crumble down, down, down for him. But there are secrets she can't bear to share with just anyone, unspeakable acts that continue to haunt, and when the similarities of Claire’s abduction couples with the fear of an unwanted visitor in town, the urge to run before it all happens again intensifies, threatening the only happiness Megan's ever found.

New Adult Romantic Suspense / Realistic Fiction
Recommended for 17+ for mature and disturbing situations, language and sexual content.

Devon Ashley was born in Huntington Beach but has spent most of her life residing in Texas. She spends a great deal of her time taking care of her husband and son but always seems to find time to write, knit and create unique decorative pieces. She particularly likes to write Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance.
Interesting Fact: Devon Ashley shares her birthday with her favorite author, Jane Austen.

•              Do you remember how/when your interest in writing started? Not really, because I was always writing something, but I guess I figured it out in high school. When I was inducted into the honor society, I got to invite a teacher to support me. I chose my seventh grade English teacher because she was my fave (probably because of all the creative writing assignments she threw at us!) I was completely taken aback when she showed up with a stack of my papers from several years back. Apparently, she had been using them for her class examples ever since and I never even knew it. When I looked them over, I totally cringed! LOL. Not only at the large bubble writing, but those stories seemed horrible to me now that I was years older. She just laughed at me and told me they were wonderful considering the age I was when I wrote them, so I opted to let her keep them and not burn them to a crisp right then and there.
•              What were the challenges (research, psychological, and logistical) in bringing this story or characters to life? Let me start by quoting the words that seem to pop out of most people’s mouths upon finishing Nearly Broken. Holy. Hell. Megan Smith was not an easy character to write at times. Not only does she go through physical trauma, but emotional trauma as well at the hands of her captors. She was a sweet, innocent girl before they entrapped her, spoiling her against her will. And writing the scenes that permanently altered everything about her life? My insides literally ached for the entire week it took to write those moments. As an author, I’d be lying if I said writing these kind of stories didn’t break me a little too.
•              What was the easiest part of writing Nearly Broken? Honestly, I wrote the entire novel in just six weeks, so in the end, it was all pretty easy to write. But the scenes that literally flew off the pages were all the ones with romantic situations. Particularly the ones where Nick is trying to lure Megan into wanting him. Love getting lost in those!
•              What is your favorite scene or was your favorite to write? Probably the scene where Megan asks Nick to really touch her. She has nothing but horrible memories when it comes to that, and she wants desperately to have fresh ones to focus on, ones that won’t haunt her and keep her up when she tries to close her eyes. There are lots of books out there that put sex into their novels to get a cheap thrill (and I’ll admit I like those at times), but then there are those where the sex is necessary and completely heartfelt, and the character literally heals before your eyes. That’s what begins to happen for Megan in Nearly Broken, and no matter how many times I read through this novel, I always get a warm, fuzzy feeling when I come across it.
•              What’s next for you writing wise that you can share with us? Oh, wow. Like most authors, I’ve got a lot on my plate. A year from now, I hope to have four more books written and out for you guys to read. I’ve even got some things swirling around in my head, but I’ve got several series I need to complete before I add anymore to my plate!
o             Right now I’m working on Catacombs, which is the third installment of my New Adult Urban Fantasy, The Immortal Archives, which follows several specially gifted supernatural beings, including two vampire hunters turned vampire, born centuries apart. Expected release: Late summer 2013.
o             Then I’ve got my follow-up to Nearly Broken, Nearly Mended, which I’ve already got lots of people asking about. Don’t worry, I’m working this baby out in my head already, so the story will be ready to go by the time I actually begin to type it out.  Expected publication: Winter 2013.
o             Up next is Stardust, the second book in my darker Young Adult Fae Fantasy trilogy, Of Dust and Darkness, where a teenage pixie named Rosalie is stolen from her home and enslaved by the fae, and in the horror of her new reality grows a forbidden romantic interest in Jack, the fae assigned to guard her. Expect publication: Spring 2014.
o             Last up, I’ve been considering a novella to my New Adult Romance, the Falling novels. Fans have been asking for a HEA for the guy (or guys!) Jenna didn’t pick, and I’ve got a little something going on in my head for it. Expected Publication if I do it: Summer 2014.

Summary from Goodreads:
Seventeen-year-old Justin's anemic blood is a blessing. Or a curse. It all depends on who you ask.

Being poisoned by a Vie is just one example. His sister getting kidnapped is another. Whether it’s being coerced by a deluded cult leader, or negotiating with Alex—an Vie scientist addicted to Anemie blood—Justin struggles to keep every mutated drop of blood he’s got.

His fight for survival gets more complicated when he meets Alex’s slave, Cara. Despite coming from different worlds, they’re both prisoners, at risk of being drained by a hungry Vie any moment. When she risks her own neck to help Justin find his sister, he's left with a terrifying choice.

Saving what's left of humanity.
